This paper describes the factors that effect NOx emissions from industrial burners and the
methods employed to control NOx emissions. The basics of NOx emissions are briefly discussed
as well as the furnace operating parameters that influence NOx emissions. Emissions data for
burners employing NOx control technologies such as combustion staging and flue gas
recirculation are presented. Finally data are presented for a new burner design employing a
unique combination of staged fuel combustion, lean premix combustion, lean-rich-lean reburn
technology and self-induced flue gas recirculation. Data showing emissions of less than 40
mg/NM3 (20 PPM) are presented from full-scale burners in a test furnace as well as field data
from an industrial process heater in a refinery.
